A long way along

In August I landed in China. A month later I arrived in Chongqing. This has been a long journey in miles and culture, time and emotions.  But I am now settled into our own apartment, have  started a routine schedule--well, sort of-- and have begun getting to know colleagues and students and have been longing to paint.  "Long" seems to be the key here.

Living here takes much more effort than at home, but when it feels like home, maybe effort will fade into the background.

Last month I visited The Summer Palace. My favorite part of this trip was Sudzou Street, a collection of little shops on the river, much as I imagine Venice to look.  Finally I've gotten to paint it.

I can imagine what the Empress felt like as she walked along these narrow streets and saw her reflection in the water's edge.

I wonder if she liked to paint.
